What is Consumer Price Index (CPI)?

The main measure of retail inflation in India, tracking the prices of a basket of goods and services bought by households.

The National Statistics Office publishes CPI data every month, separately for rural and urban areas and combined. Food has a large weight in the basket, so vegetable and pulse prices can swing the headline number. The RBI’s inflation target is set in terms of the combined CPI.
