What is Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA)?

A tax treaty between India and another country that prevents the same income from being fully taxed in both countries.

India has DTAAs with most major countries, including the US, UK, UAE, Singapore, Canada and Australia. To claim treaty benefits, NRIs usually provide a Tax Residency Certificate from their country of residence and Form 10F. The treaty may lower TDS rates or give credit for tax paid abroad.
