GST rates after GST 2.0

From 22 September 2025, most items moved into two main slabs, 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate for luxury and sin goods. Gold and jewellery attract 3%, and some rough diamonds and precious stones 0.25%. Many essential items are exempt (0%). The rate that applies depends on the HSN or SAC code of the product or service, so check the exact rate for what you sell.

Examples

  • Adding GST: a ₹1,000 service at 18% costs ₹1,180, of which ₹180 is GST (₹90 CGST + ₹90 SGST within a state).
  • Removing GST: if ₹1,180 includes 18% GST, the price before GST is ₹1,000. Note that 18% of ₹1,180 is not the GST amount. You must divide by 1.18.

CGST, SGST and IGST

When the seller and buyer are in the same state, GST is split equally between the Centre (CGST) and the state (SGST). For sales between states, the full amount is charged as Integrated GST (IGST).

How this is calculated

Add GST: Total = Price × (1 + rate). Remove GST: Price = Total ÷ (1 + rate).

For a sale within one state, GST is split equally into Central GST and State GST. For a sale between states, the full amount is charged as Integrated GST (IGST).

Assumptions

  • GST 2.0 from 22 September 2025: main slabs 5%, 18% and 40%; 3% for gold and jewellery; 0.25% for certain rough diamonds and stones. Check the exact HSN/SAC rate for your product.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove GST from a total amount?

Divide the total by (1 + rate). For 18% GST, divide by 1.18. Choose "Including GST" in the calculator and it does this for you.

Do I need GST registration?

Businesses must register once their annual turnover crosses the threshold (generally ₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services, lower in some special category states), and in certain other cases such as inter-state supply of goods or selling on e-commerce platforms.
