The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in, tax-free interest and a sovereign guarantee. It is one of the safest long-term options for building a retirement or education fund.
Example at today’s 7.1% rate
Investing the maximum ₹1.5 lakh every year for 15 years builds about ₹40.68 lakh: ₹22.5 lakh deposited and about ₹18.18 lakh interest.
Extend for one 5-year block (20 years) and it grows to about ₹66.58 lakh.
After 25 years it crosses ₹1 crore, at about ₹1.03 crore.
These figures assume the rate stays at 7.1%. The government resets it every quarter, so treat them as estimates.
Key rules
Deposit between ₹500 and ₹1.5 lakh in each financial year. Deposit before 5 April to earn interest for the whole year.
The account matures after 15 full financial years and can be extended in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits.
Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year, and loans against the balance from the 3rd to the 6th year.
Under the old tax regime, deposits qualify for the Section 80C deduction. Interest and maturity amount are tax-free in both regimes.
How this is calculated
FV = P × ((1 + r)n − 1) ÷ r × (1 + r)
P is the yearly deposit, r the annual rate and n the number of years. PPF interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month and credited once a year, so depositing before 5 April earns interest for the whole year — this calculator assumes that.
Assumptions
The rate stays the same for every year. In reality it is reset each quarter.
Deposits are made before 5 April each year. PPF deposits (up to ₹1.5 lakh), interest and maturity are tax-free under the old tax regime.
7.1% a year, compounded annually, for October to December 2026. It has been at this level since April 2020. The rate shown in the calculator is updated when the government announces a change.
Can an NRI open a PPF account?
No new accounts can be opened after becoming an NRI. An account opened while resident can be continued until maturity, but not extended.
PPF or ELSS for saving tax?
PPF gives guaranteed, tax-free returns with a long lock-in. ELSS mutual funds have only a 3-year lock-in and may earn more, but their returns are not guaranteed and gains are taxable above a limit.
Results are estimates for information only, based on the inputs and assumptions shown. They are not financial, tax or legal advice. Banks, fund houses and the tax department may calculate actual amounts differently.
