What is Basis point?

One hundredth of a percentage point (0.01%), the unit used for interest rate changes.

A 25 basis point cut in the repo rate means a cut of 0.25 percentage points, for example from 5.50% to 5.25%. Using basis points avoids confusion between a change “in percentage points” and a change “in per cent”.
