Finance glossary

What is Capital gains?

The profit made when you sell an asset such as shares, mutual funds, gold or property for more than you paid.

Gains are short-term or long-term depending on how long you held the asset. For listed shares and equity funds, gains are long-term after 12 months. Since 23 July 2024, short-term gains on these are taxed at 20%, and long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year at 12.5%. Other assets have different holding periods and rules.
