What is Non-performing asset (NPA)?

A loan on which interest or principal has been overdue for more than 90 days.

Banks must set money aside (provisions) for NPAs, which hurts their profits. High NPAs make banks cautious about lending. For a borrower, a loan becoming an NPA badly damages the credit score and can lead to recovery action.
