What is Section 80C?

The best-known old-regime tax deduction: up to ₹1.5 lakh a year for PPF, EPF, ELSS, life insurance, tuition fees and similar items.

Other eligible items include home loan principal, five-year tax-saving FDs, NSC and the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme. The deduction is not available under the new regime. “80C” is the section number from the Income-tax Act, 1961; the Income-tax Act, 2025, which applies from FY 2026-27, carries the deduction under a new section number, but the name is still widely used.
