What is Sensex?

The benchmark index of the BSE, tracking 30 large, actively traded Indian companies.

The Sensex is weighted by free-float market capitalisation, so bigger companies move it more. It started with a base value of 100 in 1978-79. When news reports say “the market rose”, they usually mean the Sensex and Nifty 50.
