Finance glossary

What is Current account deficit (CAD)?

The amount by which a country's imports of goods, services and transfers exceed its exports and income from abroad.

India usually imports more goods than it exports, mainly because of crude oil and gold, but earns large amounts from software exports and money sent home by Indians abroad. A wide CAD has to be financed by foreign investment or borrowing and can put pressure on the rupee.
