What is EMI?

An equated monthly instalment: the fixed monthly payment that repays a loan with interest over its tenure.

Each EMI covers interest on the outstanding balance and repays part of the principal. Early EMIs are mostly interest; later ones mostly principal. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but increases the total interest you pay.
