The price of gold jewellery is more than weight times the gold rate. Jewellers add making charges and 3% GST is charged on both. Use this calculator to check a quote before you buy.
How to use it
- Enter the weight in grams, as shown on the tag.
- Enter today’s rate per gram for the purity you are buying, as quoted by your jeweller (22K for most jewellery). The default ₹10,000 is only a placeholder.
- Enter making charges, either as a percentage of the gold value or as rupees per gram.
Example
A 10-gram chain at ₹10,000 a gram with 12% making charges: gold value ₹1,00,000, making ₹12,000, and GST of 3% on ₹1,12,000 is ₹3,360, for a final price of ₹1,15,360.
Buying tips
- Check the BIS hallmark and the 6-digit HUID code on the piece, and verify it in the BIS CARE app.
- Making charges vary widely, from a few per cent on simple coins to 25% or more on intricate designs. They are not recovered when you sell.
- Stones are often weighed together with the gold. Ask for the stone weight to be deducted and priced separately.
